Frequently Asked Questions

  • To schedule a counseling appointment, complete the "First Counseling Appointment" paperwork at and then call 801-422-3035 to schedule your appointment.

    **Please note - you need to call after completing the paperwork to schedule your appointment. Appointments cannot be made online.
  • The wait time for services varies depending on the time of year. The average wait time during Fall/Winter semester is about 4 weeks, while the wait during Spring/Summer tends to be shorter.

    You can always call CAPS at at 801-422-3035 to ask about the current wait time and how to get on the waitlist.
  • Yes! We offer walk-in appointments Monday - Friday, 8:00am to 4:15pm (depending on counselor availability). You will be asked to fill out a brief form, and then we will schedule you with an available counselor.

    If you need to talk with someone when our office is closed, you can call 801-422-3035 and follow the prompts to talk with an after-hours counselor.

  • In order to accommodate the demand for services, CAPS has a session limit for individual and couples therapy services. Generally, students are allowed up to 7 sessions per academic year (September - August).

    Students can ask their individual counselor about session limits and how many sessions would be appropriate for their current needs.

    **Please note that CAPS does not have session limits for Group Therapy or Biofeedback.
  • Individual and Couples Therapy appointments are 45 - 50 minutes.

    Group Therapy appointments are generally 90 - 110 minutes.

    Biofeedback appointments are 45 - 50 minutes.

    Case Management appointments are 30 - 45 minutes depending on what insurance you have.
  • We offer consultation services for individuals who are concerned about someone. Please call us at 801-422-3035 or visit for more information.
  • That's a great question. While we know individuals want to help friends, children, roommates, etc. to connect with resources, we cannot help you schedule appointments for them at CAPS. The individual will need to schedule their own appointment. We also cannot confirm whether or not someone is currently a client at CAPS.

  • Our case management team is here to support you in finding therapists in the community for longer-term care. They can help you sort through local providers and your insurance to help you find a therapist that is right for you.

    If you would like help getting connected with long-term care, complete the "Case Management Paperwork" at and then call 801-422-3035 to setup an appointment with one of our case managers.
  • BYU CAPS offers Stress Management and Biofeedback Services to ALL BYU students enrolled in any amount of daytime credit hours.

    Biofeedback uses instruments and programs that measure stress and tension in the body. Sensors measure indicators of stress like heart rate, heart rhythms, sweat gland activity, hand temperature, and muscle tension and display them live on a computer screen, showing how tense or relaxed we are.

    All clients must first complete the “Biofeedback First Appointment” paperwork found at before calling to schedule an appointment. Appointments last 45 minutes.
  • We do not provided ADHD assessments.

  • Yes, we do ask you to take the OQ survey each week. This survey helps your counselor track your progress in therapy. If you have concerns about taking the OQ each week, please talk with your counselor.
