About Us

Counseling & Psychological Services is a part of Brigham Young University’s Student Development Services (SDS). SDS is part of the College of Student Life and shares in Brigham Young University’s mission to help students realize the aims of a BYU education. SDS offers professional services designed to promote individual, interpersonal, and spiritual development. Offices within SDS facilitate success in learning and academic accomplishment, career development and overall personal growth. Our offices are committed to supporting individuals in a unique developmental process and we are committed to advancing diversity, equity, and a culture of inclusion. At CAPS, our services are sustained by commitment to research, scholarship, program development and the professional standards of our disciplines.

Psychological services in CAPS are provided by full time clinical faculty (licensed graduate-level clinicians) as well as graduate students in training. All clinical faculty are involved in a variety of direct service activities. We provide counseling services, teach Student Development Classes, offer outreach trainings, and participate in the clinical training of graduate students by supervising externs, practicum students, and part-time student hires from Counseling Psychology and Clinical Psychology programs.

Our counseling services include individual, couples, and/or group counseling. Treatment is provided free of charge to eligible students as the cost of these services are paid in part by student fees. We also offer consultative services to the campus community, including administration, housing, faculty, and ecclesiastical leaders. In addition, we provide training and supervision for doctoral interns who are part of our APA-accredited internship program. Finally, we participate in a variety of ongoing research projects and evaluations of our services.

Mission Statement

October 06, 2020 11:30 AM
The mission of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is to provide wellness programming and mental health treatment aimed at promoting positive mental health on campus. We recognize that students often encounter developmental, emotional, and interpersonal difficulties while in college, and we intervene on individual, group, and institutional levels to help students overcome obstacles and achieve their educational goals. We have specific expertise in college student mental health and provide evidence-based resources and interventions that help students achieve the “balanced development of the total person.”
